Did Jesus carry a physical sword around with him !? Absolutely NOT, -based on the widespread accounts of him as a Historical person. That means we cannot assume a ‘literal’ meaning & understanding of Mathew 10:34-39, attributed to Jesus.

Apologists, resort to verbal acrobatics, in justifying the above words of Jesus. I have read a couple of then available on the web. But I feel a better understanding & explanation of the same can be given in the light of the B.Gita. This may be apt, since there is a thinking in ‘some circles’ that Jesus had spent many years in India before his re-appearance in Palestine. That can mean that he would have had first-person knowledge of the wisdom and philosophy of India. Amongst others one such work would have been the B.Gita. Coming into intimate contact with these works, had influenced his thinking and words, it seems.!!!
Just consider the full import of Mathew 10:34-39 after replacing me/Me with a capital ME, just like in most English translation of the Gita. There Sanskrit ‘mam’ means ME, means the supreme cause, principle -‘thatwa’ of the Universe and beyond. Eg. Gita 9:11. Replacing 'me' with 'ME' in “He who loves father or mother more than ME is not worthy of ME; and he who loves son or daughter more than ME is not worthy of ME.”- The teaching exhorted through this sentence is a reflection of the renouncement of all kinds of attachment (sangam, see Gita 4:23) , even to own body & family members as taught by the Gita. (Gita 9: 13). Bible exegesis based on Western culture & context is not rewarding and fares in poor lighting , but in the light of Indian philosophy better understanding is possible.
Gita 15:3, shows the use of a ‘sharp-weapon’(can be a sword) in severing of the root of ficus tree (Aaal-maram, pipal-tree), where the tree represents the visual world.
-Asanga-shastram - Weapon of detachment- anasakthi.
It is noteworthy that all the books except the one, on Jesus in India, originated from the West.- Thus it is not part of any inimical religious propaganda.
Jesus“Do not think that I came to bring peace on Earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man's enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”
